Men's Wallet Style Guide

Vintage Crocco Bifold
The days of men's wallets coming in just one type are over for good. The man of today wants plenty of options to help narrow it down to the perfect wallet for his lifestyle and mood. With so many options available, you may need help narrowing down the right new style men's wallets for your collection. Here are the most common new style men's wallets on the market for the man of today.

Bifold Wallets

This is one of the most popular options for any man of taste looking for something classic and stylish. These wallets fold in half for a sleek choice perfect for those looking to avoid anything too bulky. The wallet can lay flat, provided it isn't overstuffed during use. A bifold wallet usually features such elements of design as ID pocket, coin compartment, card slots, and bill/cash compartment. There are also bifold wallets with dividers within the bill compartment for organizing receipts, cash, and other items.

Trifold Wallets

A trifold wallet gets it name from the fact that it folds into thirds. This is achieved by the outer third of the wallet folding into the center while the opposite side folds over both. While the design of the wallet is obviously bulkier than the traditional bifold, it is usually smaller in size for each compartment for the extra fold. The common features of this wallet type include a bill compartment, ID pocket, and multiple card slots. In fact, a trifold usually has more card slots than a bifold for extra storage.

Front Pocket Wallets

When looking at new style men's wallets, the front pocket option is a great choice for a few reasons. It is sleek and slender so you can keep it in your front pocket hence the name. It is ideal for an everyday choice of carrying just the essentials without adding too much bulk or weight. A front pocket wallet is usually a card slot area on one side and a zippered pocket or a clip on the other side.

Hipster Wallets

Another popular choice when looking at new style men's wallets is the hipster. The hipster, also called an attaché wallet, is similar to a bifold in the way it folds. It differs from a regular bifold wallet in that it is taller and wider. This style is often considered a dressier option and is commonly used for special occasions.

Card Case Wallets

Often sold with wallets for their similarity, card cases are used specifically for holding credit cards, ID, gift cards, business cards, and other similar cards. While many options do not have a bill compartment, there are some with this option or even a small gusset pocket where some men choose to carry bills.

Checkbook Wallets

This type of wallet is a long bifold wallet that is made to carry a checkbook. This wallet also has areas for bills, card slots, an ID window, and usually a pen holder. A longer design to accommodate the checkbook, this type of wallet doesn't fold at all in the way a trifold or bifold does, but it gives the added benefit of being able to carry all the necessities, checkbook included.

Zipper Wallets

A zipper wallet is a bifold wallet that also has an outer zipper component on the outside edges of the fold. This zipper design ensures the contents of the wallet stay secure and never spill out. It is worth noting that this style of wallet has limits to how much you can put inside in order for the zipper to work so if you like to stuff a wallet to the max, this may not be for you. On the flip side, if you are trying to learn a more streamlined approach and cut down on what you carry, this could be a good choice for that very reason.

Money Clips

A money clip wallet is usually a bifold wallet without the bill compartment but with a money clip at the back of the wallet. This type of wallet is usually slim in profile and forces you to carry just the basics of a few credit cards, ID, and bills. This option fits nicely in a front pocket without adding too much bulk or weight.

Choosing a Wallet

With so many options available for the man of style, it can be overwhelming. Here are a few tips to help you choose between the many options listed in this guide.
    • Consider what you need to carry. When choosing a wallet, make sure you consider what you intend to carry. This is the most important factor and also one of the easiest ways to narrow it down. If you are only looking to carry a few cards and bills, a smaller option will suit you. When looking to carry other items such as a checkbook, consider a larger option.
    • Decide on a wallet based on occasion. The perfect wallet isn't usually just one solution for all occasions. Since there are so many different wallet types and each one has its own unique function, it makes sense to have more than one on hand to accommodate different needs.
    • Evaluate style and function. It is important to consider style and function together. If a wallet is stylish yet lacks the proper function for your specific needs, it is just a pretty accessory with no real value to your life. Make sure you choose a wallet that is functional for your everyday needs.
