Wine, Leather, and Wallets

October 7, 2020
Bosca is an American Brand and an American family, but we do have one foot solidly in Italy. Normally in October we depart for 2-4 weeks in Italy in order to oversee the inspection of the leather and the tanning process. We stay in an apartment in Florence not far from the factories shown in previous blog posts. My work there consists of inspecting our hand-stained leathers Old Leather®, Dolce®, and “Washed” as well as developing new leathers and colorations. This is one of my favorite parts of the job and the design process. Having direct interaction with the materials is part of what makes Bosca products so special. Leather has always been an inspiration to me.

The weather in October is ideal. These are harvest days so many seasonal foods satisfy us after long a day’s work. If I am very lucky I get to visit our friends who own a vineyard in the heart of the Chianti region. This is the time of year when all hands in the countryside are in the fields bringing in the grapes. This has even become a way for volunteers to experience the age old work of grape gathering.
I feel an itch to travel at this time of year. My internal alarm clock goes off, telling me that it is “Italy Time, leather time, my favorite time of the year.” This year, due to Covid-19, we will not make the trip. We are inspecting leatherwith video and working with our factories with zoom. It is not the same at all, though we hold the utmost trust in our partners at the factory (after all, they have been at this business for about as long as anyone).

At Bosca we hope for a time when we all regain the luxury of freedom of movement. This fall we will settle for a glass of Chianti (or maybe a prosecco from the North?) in our own backyard.

Leather and wine share some connection. They are both of the land and vary with the particularities of the region. Their manipulation is part science, alchemy, and artistry. Both leather and (red) wine are dependent on tannins. Naturally occurring tannins in wine form in long chains that give the wine richness, longevity, and the smooth and satisfying tastes and textures in the mouth.
Our vegetable tanned leathers are the best leathers available anywhere on earth. We feel extremely confident in that fact. If we did not, we certainly would not claim so. This is, in part, due to the natural tannins that are used to produce truly fine leather. The result is something that is rich, long-lived, and satisfying in the hand. If you enjoy wine or know someone who does, you might want to think about our Italian leather wine accessories including a sinlge, aTwo Bottle Wine Case , and Corkscrew & Sheath. The blend of natural wine next to natural leather is truly creates the ambience of luxury you deserve.
